2008 Draft Environmental Impact Statement

In late November 2008, the Department of Energy (DOE), with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) as joint-lead agency, released for public comment the Revised Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Decommissioning and/or Long-Term Stewardship at the West Valley Demonstration Project & Western New York Nuclear Service Center [DOE/EIS-0226D (Revised)] The comment period closed in 2009. The DEIS and appendices are available on the DOE website HERE. The Citizen Task Force submitted comments on May 27, 2009. Link to Comments.

Simultaneously with the release of the DEIS, DOE issued a public notice that the Decommissioning Plan for the West Valley Demonstration Project was available for public inspection. (See below.)

2010 FEIS, Record of Decision & Finding Statement

In April 2010 the Department of Energy (DOE) released the Record of Decision for Decommissioning and Long-Term Stewardship at the West Valley Demonstration Project and Western New York Nuclear Service Center. In May 2010 the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) as joint-lead agency released the State Environmental Quality Review Finding Statement. The preferred alternative adopted a phased approach. The Final Environmental Impact Statement is available on the DOE website HERE. Also available are the Record of Decision and Finding Statement.

Following the release of the ROD and FS, Phase 1 work began and the agencies established the Phase 1 Studies process to aid in decision making and consensus for Phase 2. Information and studies concerning the Phase 1 Studies may be found on a devoted website HERE. Subsequently the agencies agrees to a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the Phase 2 decision.
