Olean Times Herald -‘Sitewide removal’ only alternative for West Valley

May 10, 2018 – “The West Valley nuclear waste facility in Cattaraugus County has housed radioactive and toxic waste for more than 50 years on a site that should never have been allowed to hold any waste — nor would be allowed today because of its erodible soils.Link to article

Post Journal – West Valley Cleanup Bill Includes $75 Million In Funding

March 25, 2018 – “More than $75 million was included in the recently announced omnibus bill for cleanup of the West Valley Demonstration Project. 

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and Sen.Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, helped successfully secure an additional $8.6 million above 2017 levels in the spending bill. The funding was included as part of the 20018 Omnibus, which is set to pass Congress in the coming days, to pay for ongoing cleanup efforts at the former nuclear site.” Link to article

DOE Environmental Management Bulletin – Lessons Learned From West Valley Legacy Waste Cleanup Improve Efficiency

May 8, 2018 – “EM and its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project(WVDP) say their commitment to applying lessons learned has helped keep them on track to reach a major milestone in legacy waste disposition later this year.” Link to article

May 4, 2018 – “Public comments regarding the SEIS for the West Valley Site will be accepted until Friday, May 25. ” Link to article

DOE Environmental Management Bulletin – Students Near West Valley Site Test Environmental Knowledge

May 1, 2018 – “A team of high school students takes a practical exam at a wildlife station during last week’s Cattaraugus County Envirothon. Teams of students tested their knowledge of aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, soils, and management of public rangelands. Randolph Central School, the winner of the competition, will represent the county at the state’s Envirothon May 23-24 in Seneca Falls. EM West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley was a sponsor of this local outdoor environmental competition on April 25.” Link to Bulletin
