Below are articles and other news published since the last West Valley Citizen Task Force Meeting. They relate to the West Valley Demonstration Project, nuclear waste cleanup or are otherwise relevant or of potential interest to stakeholders interested in the Project. After each Citizen Task Force Meeting, these articles are compiled into a single document and may be found with the meeting materials for that month.

Springville Journal – WVDP Food Drive Exceeds Its Goal

November 23, 2017 – “The workforce at the West Valley Demonstration Project completed its Annual Food Drive on Nov. 16, as part of its continued commitment to the community. The annual tradition began in 1989, and has been held every year since. In total, the WVDP Food Drive has collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of food since its inception.” Link to Article

Salamanca Press – WVDP volunteers donate to local food pantries

November 17, 2017 – “To spread good will for the upcoming holiday season, employees from the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) and its subcontractors gathered Friday at Sander’s Parkview, volunteering their time and energy to once again distribute food to nine local food pantries.” Link to Article

Springville Journal – Ashford Friends Coalition hopes to lead change

November 9, 2017 – “Over the years, people in the Town of Ashford have expressed their opinions and have been fighting to fix problems caused by the West Valley Nuclear Plant. Recently, a group has been formed to help lead the charge in getting the town proper reparations for having to deal with the nuclear plant.” Link to Article

Buffalo News – $4.7 billion federal contract inked to handle liquid N-waste

October 13, 2017 – “A federal contract estimated at $4.7 billion to handle liquid radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C. was inked Thursday, the U.S. Department of Energy reported.

That may be of interest to Western New Yorkers because radioactive waste from Canada goes to that site in South Carolina, and a possible route for the waste involves tractor-trailer transports over the Peace Bridge, through downtown Buffalo on the Niagara Thruway to the mainline Thruway and west to Erie.” Link to Article

NOTE: A clarification from DOE, the contract that was awarded to Savannah River EcoManagement LLC is for the solidification of the liquids in the underground tanks at Savannah River.  The shipment of materials from Canada to the Savannah River Site is done under a different contract with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.
