Cattaraugus County Community Source – Soil and structure removal project completed at WVDP

July 14, 2022 – Environmental Management and its prime contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) completed the permeable treatment wall soil and structure removal project and restored the area as part of its ongoing cleanup efforts at the West Valley Demonstration Project.

Materials from the soil and structure removal project were used in constructing the permeable treatment wall, which remains in place.

“This project demonstrated the benefits of using the rail line for waste operations, as well as for increased safety, efficiency, and cost‐savings,” said Steve Bousquet, Department of Energy‐WVDP Deputy Federal Project Director for the Main Plant Process Building. Link to article

World Nuclear News – US companies partner on nuclear recycling technology

July 8, 2022 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Energy Northwest and Curio sees Energy Northwest as an industry partner and potential off‐taker of products produced through Curio’s NuCycle nuclear waste recycling process.

The MoU is part of Curio’s plans to deploy the USA’s first state‐of‐the‐art commercial nuclear fuel recycling facility that will provide a variety of in‐demand commodities and products, the companies said. These include domestically produced low‐enriched uranium fuel for the current US reactor fleet, as well as HALEU (high‐assay low‐enriched uranium) and transuranic‐based TRUfuel for advanced reactors under development. The Paducah Sun – FRNP contract extended 3 years

July 7, 2022 – Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership recently received the first of two option periods from the U. S. Department of Energy to continue deactivation and remediation work at the DOE’s Paducah site through June 19, 2025.

The three‐year contract is valued at approximately $394 million and will be used to further DOE’s cleanup mission at the Paducah site.

“FRNP appreciates DOE’s confidence in our team to continue making progress in deactivation and environmental remediation efforts at the Paducah Site,” said Myrna Redfield, FRNP program manager. Link to article

Salamanca Press – WVDP partners with Boy Scouts troop to ‘Adopt‐A‐Highway’

June 23, 2022 – The Department of Energy (DOE) and cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) partnered with Boy Scout Troop 643 and Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works’ Adopt‐A‐Highway Program to cleanup Thornwood Drive in West Valley.

Sponsored by the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP), Boy Scout Troop 643 worked with the County to adopt one mile of Thornwood Drive to enhance the attainment of a park‐like appearance on this roadway.

The Troop has an agreement with the County to clean this section of Thornwood Drive a minimum of two times per year. Link to article
