Salamanca Press – Seneca, Onondaga groups gather at WVDP for Earth Day

May 12, 2022 – The Cattaraugus Creek Water Walkerz and Onondowaga’ Water Protectors began this year’s Earth Day event at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) in Ashford.

This annual Earth Day event pays tribute to Mother Earth and brings attention to the importance of protecting the Cattaraugus Creek and Lake Erie watershed for future generations.

The WVDP is an appropriate starting point due to its proximity to the Nation Territory and ongoing cleanup efforts to reduce environmental risks.

Walkers from the Seneca Nation, local community and visitors gathered to participate in a sunrise ceremony to kickoff the event. Link to article

EM Update – Plans for EM Progress Detailed in New Budget Document

May 10, 2022 – EM’s budget request for fiscal year 2023 will support advancements across the program complex, including progress on treating tank waste, skyline‐changing building demolition, and initiatives to bolster cybersecurity, workforce development and outreach to communities, according to a newly released document.

The program’s plans for continued progress in environmental cleanup are discussed in a detailed accounting that was provided to Congress last week. DOE’s 490‐page “congressional justification” book for EM provides the most in‐depth information about the program’s plans for the next fiscal year. Link to Update

EM Updates – FY23 Budget Request Enables Steady, Sustained Cleanup Success and Budget Proposal Would Enable Signature Skyline Changes to Continue

April 26, 2022

Update 1: EM has requested a fiscal year (FY) 2023 budget of $7.64 billion, an amount that will enable the program to continue making strong, steady and sustained progress on priorities to clean up legacy nuclear sites now and in the years ahead.

The budget proposal reflects a firm commitment to support remediation activities in communities that historically supported or continue to support nuclear weapons programs and government‐sponsored nuclear research. It positions EM for continuing success.

Update 2: Landmark skyline changes would continue across EM sites through key investments proposed in EM’s fiscal year (FY) 2023 budget request, reflecting the Administration’s strong commitment to cleaning up the environment in a new era of steady, sustained achievement.
