Below are articles and other news published since the last West Valley Citizen Task Force Meeting. They relate to the West Valley Demonstration Project, nuclear waste cleanup or are otherwise relevant or of potential interest to stakeholders interested in the Project. Nuclear Engineering International

October 6, 2021 – Today, the USA imports almost all of its uranium supply, tapping Canada and Australia for the lion’s share.

In the middle of the last century, however, the US was enjoying something of a boom in uranium mining. In addition to being well placed to produce uranium, the country was on the road to nuclear fuel reprocessing, with one commercial plant operational at West Valley and two others under construction: General Electric’s Morris facility in Illinois and Allied‐General Nuclear Service’s Barnwell reprocessing plant in South Carolina. But that only lasted until the late 1970s. Link to article

EM Update -West Valley Experts Detail Main Plant Demolition Safeguards in New Videos

October 5, 2021 – EM’s West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) and cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) have released two videos related to the planned demolition of the Main Plant Process Building featuring site subject‐matter experts with more than 130 years of combined experience in nuclear decommissioning and environmental cleanup.

One of the videos, on environmental monitoring, details the site’s innovative monitoring system that verifies protective measures and safeguards in place continue to be protective of employees, the public, and the environment. Link to Update

My Little Falls -SCHENECTADY ARTIST FEATURED AT THE LITTLE FALLS PUBLIC LIBRARY

October 5, 2021 – Schenectady artist, Gary Glinski, will be featured at the Little Falls Public Library until the end of November. In his work, he plays with dreams, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and lullabies that are part of our childhood and adult culture. He also addresses the fragility of family dynamics and the underlying threads of violence and danger that underpin family life. Often these themes are combined into paintings that feature mundane domestic objects. Link to article

Springville/Ellicottville Pennysaver & News – West Valley repurposes facility to support main plant demolition

October 2, 2021 – The West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) is altering a former storage facility for use in processing waste during the demolition of the Main Plant Process Building.

“The modifications to this facility are a step towards the future demolition of the Main Plant Process Building,” EM WVDP Director Bryan Bower said. “This work also saves taxpayers money by using this former storage facility for a different purpose and operation. The WVDP team is doing an excellent job in planning and executing this work.” Link to article
