Springville/Ellicottville Pennysaver & News -West Valley Demonstration Project food drive exceeds its goal

January 23, 2021 – The workforce at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) completed its Annual Food Drive on November 12, as part of their continued commitment to the community.

The goal this year was to collect 120,000 pounds of food – enough to provide turkeys, holiday items and staples for nine food pantries. This year’s Food Drive, which exceeded last year’s goal, collected 125,000 pounds of food, which will help hundreds of families in need during this holiday season. This annual tradition began in 1989, and has been held every year since then. In total, the WVDP Food Drive has collected more than 2 million pounds of food since its inception. Link to article

Times Union -Environmentalists push for safe cleanup at nuclear site near Buffalo

January 20, 2021 – Environmental advocacy groups in western New York want state officials to ensure the safety of federal plans to deal with nuclear waste at the West Valley Demonstration Project after a recent federal report found that “critical decisions regarding the project are still unresolved.”

The West Valley Demonstration Project “should never have been chosen” to store hazardous material, said Barbara Warren, a member of the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition, an Albany‐based group that advocates for safe and healthy communities in New York. Link to article

Homeland Security Today -GAO: Congressional Action Needed on West Valley Nuclear Waste Cleanup

January 19, A commercial facility in western New York known as the West Valley Demonstration Project reprocessed used nuclear fuel into usable nuclear material. It closed in 1976 but wastes remain and there are no facilities authorized to accept this waste.

In 1980, Congress directed the Department of Energy (DOE) to clean up part of the site. The site contained 600,000 gallons of liquid high‐level waste, radioactively contaminated structures and soils, and buried radioactive waste. In 2011, DOE began the first phase of its decommissioning plan, which included demolishing above‐ground structures and removing contaminated soils. Link to article

DOE EM Update -West Valley Promotes Safety Through the Eyes of Children in 2021 Calendar

January 19, 2021 – It’s a new year, and EM and its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) have created a new calendar to raise safety awareness among site workers and their families.

The Family Fun Safety Calendar features drawings by the children of WVDP employees depicting general safety practices. Link to Update
