Springville Journal – Demo starts at WVDP thanks to workers

September 30, 2017 – “The West Valley Demonstration Project is one step closer to completing its mission, with the beginning of demolition of its Vitrification Facility. Officially started on Sept. 11, the demolition is expected to take about eight months. A commemorative event marked the beginning of the demolition of the first Vitrification Facility in the United States.” Link to Article

US News and World Report – Demolition of Building Underway at Western NY Nuke Site

September 25, 2017 – “A building that has been central to the decades-long cleanup of a western New York nuclear site is being demolished.

Crews this month began tearing down the vitrification facility at the West Valley Demonstration Project. The reinforced concrete structure is where more than 600,000 gallons of high-level radioactive waste were solidified into glass for disposal.” Link to Article

September 22, 2017 – “Following two years of planning, demolition of the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) vitrification facility in New York State began last week. The work is scheduled to be completed in eight months.” Link to Article

Olean Times Herald – WVDP Ceremony Marks Start of Vitrification Facility Demolition

September 22, 2017 – “The start of the demolition of the vitrification facility at the West Valley Demonstration Project was marked by a celebration Thursday.

As U.S. Department of Energy and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority officials spoke beneath a nearby tent, huge excavators from Demolition and Nuclear Decommissioning continued to tear into the 50-foot-tall vitrification facility.” Link to Article
